DAG 15 i SLC – idag har Edith fått en ny chans

Några minuter i tio i morse pussade vi Edith på pannan innan hon rullades iväg av narkosläkaren. Precis som vid förra operationen hade vi turen att Kimberly Orton som är svenskättling och kan lite svenska, kunde vara med i operationssalen – tack Kimberly för att du alltid tar lite extra hand om oss. Annars hade personalens och Ediths enda möjlighet varit att kommunicera med tummarna, tumme ner jätteont, tumme upp inte så farligt etc. Operationstiden var uppskattad till drygt tre timmar.

En stund efter lunch kom dr Bollo och miss Orton från operationssalen och berättade att allt verkar ha gått bra. Edith somnade och vaknade lugnt, trots att hon gjorde det utan oss. Operationen gick enligt plan och den efterföljande datortomografin såg bra ut. Nu ska vi bara slippa infektioner också. Innan vi fick möta upp Edith på väg från uppvaket till hennes rum, visade dr Bollo oss både fotografier från operationen och 3D-moduleringar från datortomografin. Det var minst sagt overkligt.

Den här dagen är och har varit en känslomässig berg- och dalbana. Den är inte slut än. Samtidigt tvingas man att stänga av så mycket känslor det går en sådan här dag.  Det har vi försökt göra i flera år nu. Förr eller senare bubblar de väl upp och kanske över. Kanske pyser det över lite ikväll, kanske kokar det över ordentligt när det finns möjlighet att bryta ihop några dagar.

Men, just nu tar vi ett steg i taget, steget idag var stort. Det här ett stort, stort kliv mot ett bättre liv för Edith, för lillebror och oss.

DAY 15 in SLC – now Edith got a chance

A few minutes to ten this morning, we kissed Edith on the forehead before she was rolled away by the anesthesiologist. Just like in the previous surgery, we were lucky that Ms Kimberly Orton, who is of Swedish descent and speak some Swedish, could be in the operating room – thank you Kimberly for always taking extra care of us. Otherwise, the staff and Edith’s only opportunity would have been to communicate with the thumbs: thumbs down very sore, thumbs up not so bad, etc. The surgery time was estimated to just over three hours.

Sometime after lunch, Dr. Bollo and Ms Orton came from the operating room and told us that everything seemed to have gone well. Edith fell asleep and woke up calmly, even though she did it without us. The surgery went according to plan and the CT-scan looked good. Now we’ll just have to avoid infections too. Before we met Edith on the way to her room, Dr. Bollo showed us both photographs from the surgery and 3D modulations from the CT – surreal.

This day is and has been an emotional roller coaster. It’s not over yet. At the same time, to cope you have to turn off your emotions on a day like this. We have been trying to do that for several years now. Sooner or later the emotions will bubble up and maybe over. Maybe they will bubble up a little tonight, maybe they will be boiling over completely some day when there’s a chance to break down for a few days.

But, right now we are taking one step at a time, the step today was big. It meant taking a leap towards a better life for Edith, for little brother and us.

*We have been waiting for many hours in different hospital rooms by now. I have walked countless miles back and forth in those rooms.
** The RNS-device on the right, attachment on the left. Edith is the first person in Sweden with this technology.
*** Edith is obviously tired after the surgery. But she has been awake, talked to us and eaten. Now she needs to rest.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Edith´s anesthesiologist today, also of Scandinavian descent by the way, who together with his colleagues chose to make a big difference for us. Thank you.
